Valerie Darden showcases her love of mixing traditional and modern.
Valerie Darden, a content creator and the founder of Brexton Cole Interiors, describes her design style as a mix between traditional and modern, but notes that in recent years, she has veered further toward the traditional end of the spectrum. “I love old homes with moldings, arched doorways, and high ceilings,” the Virginia resident comments. “As a result, I have come to appreciate traditional wallpaper, prints, and vintage furniture pieces like chairs, sofas and benches.”
In this vein, Darden opted to go the traditional route when selecting Artfully Walls prints for her home, opting for the Pug Dog Portrait and King Charles Spaniel Dog Portrait, both by artist Tim Ross. “These types of styles have been featured in homes for generations,” Darden says. “I decided to add an eclectic vibe to my gallery wall by choosing the humorous (yet chic) photo of a Roman statue with his nose being held,” she adds, referring to Alex Kostinyski’s Knuba print.

Darden selected black and gold frames for all of her prints, which now shine in her primary bedroom across from the bed. “This is the area directly next to our entrance door, and this placement allows guests who walk by to easily see this cool art,” she explains.
When assembling a gallery wall, whether large or small in scale, Darden recommends first hanging up the largest piece of art and using it as an anchor. Leaving enough space between pieces is key, too. “Three inches is a good rule of thumb between each piece when hanging art,” she says.
Darden always enjoys sourcing art, whether for her own space or one belonging to a client. “Art is a great way to personalize your home and create warmth,” she reflects. “By placing pretty pieces of art in your home, this will help your space feel welcoming, layered, and overall, chic!”
